A Built-In Fit for Your Pals

This past year, one of our clients made a request we'd never heard before.

It stemmed from an obstacle of sorts, and often times, an obstacle is what fuels creativity. In this case, we were working with limited space in the family room, and there was no room for a conventional dog crate...

Enter: creative solution.

We designed a built-in which would accommodate the TV and the dogs!! If you know me, you know that I love anything related to dogs!

It took a few rounds of designs to come up with the perfect solution - let’s walk through it.

a 2d drawing made in CAD and Sketchup of the built-ins from front view and side view with dimensions

We began with a two door design for the “crate” portion, soon to realize the doors would jut out too far when open.

Then we made them pocket doors, but the depth was too shallow to house the doors.

We landed on a 3 door section, where the middle panel is fixed, sandwiched between two pocket doors. We chose a decorative mesh on the face of the doors for visibility (not to mention, it looks SO cool!)

a view of the small-space family room, featuring a chenille sectional and matching ottoman, two skylights, wall art, sconces, and a custom built-in

The final product! The room feels open, the pups have a safe and cozy place to lay, and there’s no unsightly dog crate taking up space. It was such a fun and creative process - we love problem solving, especiallly for the sake of our furry friends!
